Scholarships  - sometimes you just have to ‘give it a go’.

As we embrace a new year,  as a Uni students the focus turns to the excitement (and perhaps some trepidation) of commencing their studies. So much is new and there’s a lot to consider.

Regardless of your study focus or University,  take the time to see what scholarships are on offer.

Over many years as an educator, managing scholarship programs, and career coaching, I have observed a reluctance of students to apply for scholarships (the negative self-talk stymies action and it’s along the lines – I am not smart enough-  people like me don’t get scholarships) and consequently the student just doesn’t apply.  Just like us scholarships come in all shapes and sizes and are not all academically focussed.

There’s one certainty - the only sure way not to ‘win’ a scholarship is not to apply! Sometimes you just have to ‘give it a go’.

All major universities have scholarship offerings with a range of  $ values and eligibility criteria. To get started simply type scholarships into your preferred Uni website or into your search engine.

Some scholarships are provided directly by the University; others from donors directly supporting a specific University, and there are a range of scholarships more broadly available regardless of which institution you are attending. Take the time to search and see what’s on offer, check out the criteria, the scope of the application, and that critical factor, the due date.

The financial support of any scholarship is certainly the most tangible and immediate benefit and a welcome financial boost.

Beyond the money, for a recipient, a scholarship is about recognition and opportunity. And of course it looks good on your CV as well! It could just be the one thing that distinguishes you from other students/graduates. It sends a very positive message to employers.

Scholarships are about ‘doing good’ and they have benefits for the donors as well as recipients. Donors are connected with, for example, potential future employees or members. Recipients are connected with future career opportunities; access to professional networks, and may have the opportunity to undertake work experience or vacation employment. Without doubt, scholarships open doors.

And scholarships are not all about those studying at University, there also are scholarships available if studying at TAFE and/or undertaking apprenticeships.

YES apply for more than one scholarship! The first application is often the most difficult – once you get a sense of what is required you can adapt accordingly.
